Southampton Road carries the A27 westward from Fareham through Park Gate towards Swanwick and Bursledon. It is one of the principal traffic routes in the borough, connecting Fareham to the M27 junction 9 and onward to Southampton. The road is heavily used by commuters and commercial traffic. Along its length through Park Gate, it has a commercial strip with supermarkets, petrol stations, takeaways, and service businesses. The character is roadside suburban, dominated by traffic and the associated retail that grows up along busy routes. Further west towards Swanwick, the road becomes more residential. Fareham Reach retail park and the Tesco superstore are accessed from the Southampton Road corridor.
