High Street
Street guide, Fareham
Fareham High Street is the principal shopping street in the town centre, running north-south from Portland Street to the junction with Quay Street and West Street. The street was pedestrianised in the 1980s and remains the main retail spine of the town. A mix of national chains and independent retailers line the street, with Fareham Shopping Centre accessed from the eastern side. The Monday market sets up along the High Street, continuing a trading tradition that dates back to the medieval period. Holy Trinity Church provides an architectural focal point roughly halfway along. The street has seen recent public realm investment, including new paving and planting. Cafes with outdoor seating have become more common. The northern end around Portland Street has a slightly different character, with more service businesses and takeaways.
