Salterns Lane
Street guide, Fareham
Salterns Lane runs south from the Cams Hill area towards the shore of Fareham Creek. The name is a reminder of the salt extraction that was once carried out along the shores of the creek, where seawater was evaporated in shallow pans to produce salt. The lane provides access to residential properties and to the footpaths along the creek shore. The southern end offers views across the mudflats and saltmarsh. At low tide, the creek exposes a wide expanse of mud that supports populations of wading birds. Salterns Lane is narrow and quiet, with a semi-rural character despite being within the built-up area of Fareham.
