Quay Street

Street guide, Fareham

Quay Street runs south from the junction of the High Street and West Street towards the head of Fareham Creek. The name reflects the historical importance of the quay, which was active when Fareham was a small port handling coastal trade and the output of local brickworks. Today the quay area has been redeveloped, but the street name preserves the memory. Quay Street itself has a mix of older buildings and modern development. There are a few restaurants and cafes, and the street provides pedestrian access to the waterfront area and the Town Quay. The character is quieter than the main shopping streets, with a slightly more relaxed feel. The southern end of Quay Street opens out to views of the creek, which at low tide exposes extensive mudflats used by wading birds.
