Portland Street marks the northern boundary of the main town centre shopping area, running east-west at the top of the High Street. It carries through-traffic and is one of the busier roads in central Fareham. The street has a mix of commercial properties including takeaways, barbers, and small retailers, along with some residential properties above the shops. The northern side connects to residential streets that lead up towards Fareham Common and the recreation ground. Portland Street has a more utilitarian character than the pedestrianised High Street to the south. Bus stops along the street serve routes heading north towards Wickham and east towards Portchester. The junction with the High Street is the effective northern gateway to the shopping area.
