Hampshire's Market Town

Newgate Lane

Street guide, Fareham

Newgate Lane is the main road heading south from Fareham towards Stubbington, Lee-on-the-Solent, and Gosport. The route has been subject to significant road improvement, with the new Newgate Lane East bypass constructed to relieve congestion on the original road. The old Newgate Lane runs through a semi-rural area with scattered properties and small holdings. The new road is a modern dual carriageway. The corridor is one of the main traffic routes in the borough, carrying commuter traffic between the Gosport peninsula and the M27. Development pressure along the Newgate Lane corridor has been a contentious local planning issue, with proposals for significant housebuilding on adjacent land.
