Swimming in Fareham
Indoor pools, open water, and where to swim
Swimming in Fareham centres on the pool at Fareham Leisure Centre, with some options for open water swimming at the coast. The provision is limited to a single main public pool, which means it needs to serve a wide range of users.
Fareham Leisure Centre on Park Lane has the main public swimming pool, a twenty-five-metre indoor pool with lane swimming, public sessions, and lessons. The pool is operated by Everyone Active and is open seven days a week. Lane swimming sessions are available at specific times, typically in the early mornings and evenings, for those who want to swim lengths without interruption. Public swimming sessions cater to all ages and abilities. The pool can be busy, particularly during school holiday periods and weekend family sessions.
Swimming lessons for children are available at the leisure centre, following the Swim England Learn to Swim programme. Waiting lists for lesson spaces can be long, and parents are advised to register early. The programme takes children from water confidence through to stroke development. Adult swimming lessons and improver sessions are also available for those learning later in life or returning to swimming after a break.
Aqua aerobics and water-based fitness classes run at set times during the week. These are popular with older adults and those seeking low-impact exercise that is gentle on joints. The buoyancy of the water provides resistance without the impact of land-based exercise.
Outside the pool, open water swimming in the Solent is practised by a small but dedicated community. The waters off Hill Head and Lee-on-the-Solent provide sheltered swimming in the summer months, though the water temperature in the Solent remains cool even in August and is genuinely cold for much of the year. Open water swimming carries additional risks compared to pool swimming, including currents, boat traffic, and cold water shock. Swimmers should be experienced and ideally swim with others or within sight of someone on shore.
There is no lido or outdoor heated pool in Fareham, which is a gap that some residents feel keenly during the summer months. The nearest outdoor pool options are at some distance, and there have been no serious proposals to build one locally.
Private swimming facilities exist at some health clubs and hotel pools in the wider area, available to members or guests.
For competitive swimmers, the Fareham Nomads Swimming Club provides training and competition opportunities for young swimmers. The club trains at the leisure centre and competes in regional and national events. The club has a strong track record and provides a pathway for talented young swimmers.
