Walks in Fareham

Walking routes along the coast, through woodland, and around the town

Fareham borough offers a good variety of walking, from coastal paths to woodland trails to urban exploration. The landscape is gentle, with no significant hills apart from the Portsdown ridge, making most routes accessible to a wide range of abilities.

The Solent Way long-distance footpath passes through the southern part of the borough, following the coast from Hill Head eastward through Lee-on-the-Solent toward Gosport. The Hill Head section provides sea views, beach walking, and access to Titchfield Haven nature reserve. This is one of the most scenic walks in the borough and can be extended in either direction for a longer day out. At Titchfield Haven, the combination of coastal scenery and birdwatching makes for a particularly rewarding walk.

Fareham Creek offers an estuary walk from the town centre southward along the shore toward Cams Hall and Portsmouth Harbour. The path follows the creek, passing mudflats that attract wading birds at low tide. The views across the harbour toward Portsmouth and the naval dockyard provide a working waterfront backdrop. This walk connects the commercial town centre to a surprisingly natural waterfront environment within a short distance.

Holly Hill Woodland Park in Locks Heath is a 22-hectare woodland with well-maintained paths, benches, and information boards. The park is suitable for family walks, with level paths and a variety of trees and wildlife. It is particularly pleasant in spring when the bluebells are in flower, and the canopy provides welcome shade in summer.

The old Gosport railway line, now a shared-use path for walkers and cyclists, provides a traffic-free route from Fareham south toward Gosport. The path follows the former trackbed and passes through a green corridor that provides a surprising sense of separation from the surrounding suburban development. It is flat and well surfaced, making it accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Fort Nelson and the Portsdown Hill ridge provide elevated walking with panoramic views south over Portsmouth Harbour, the Solent, and the Isle of Wight. The ridge is exposed and can be windy, but the views on a clear day are some of the best in Hampshire. On a really clear day you can see the chalk cliffs of the Isle of Wight and the cranes at Southampton docks.

Within the town itself, the route from the High Street down to the creek via Quay Street makes for a short but pleasant walk, connecting the commercial centre to the waterfront.

Titchfield village to Titchfield Haven and the coast is a popular circular walk of approximately four miles, combining village heritage with nature reserve birding and coastal scenery.

All of these walks are free, and most are accessible year-round, though some low-lying paths near the creek and coast can be muddy in winter. Sturdy footwear is advisable outside the summer months.
