Fareham Community Hospital, QA, and where to go in an emergency

Fareham does not have a major acute hospital within the town itself. For accident and emergency treatment, major surgery, and specialist care, residents rely on the hospitals in Portsmouth and Southampton. This is a common arrangement for towns of Fareham's size, but it means that understanding which hospital to go to and when is important.

Queen Alexandra Hospital (QA) in Cosham is the nearest major hospital and the one most Fareham residents use for emergency and acute care. It is run by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and provides a full range of services including A&E, maternity, cancer treatment, and specialist surgery. QA is approximately six miles from Fareham town centre, reachable in fifteen to twenty minutes by car outside peak hours. During rush hour, the journey can take considerably longer via the M27 and the A27, which is a concern for genuine emergencies.

Southampton General Hospital is further away but provides some specialist services not available at QA, including the major trauma centre for the region. It is a major teaching hospital. Residents in the western part of the borough (Whiteley, Park Gate, Locks Heath) may find Southampton General more accessible than QA in some circumstances, particularly when the M27 eastbound is congested.

Fareham Community Hospital on Highlands Road provides community health services including outpatient clinics, physiotherapy, X-ray facilities, and some minor procedures. It is not an acute hospital and does not have an A&E department. The hospital serves a useful function for routine appointments and rehabilitation services that do not require the full resources of QA. It is well used by local patients and saves many a trip to Cosham.

The Fareham and Gosport area has a minor injuries unit (MIU) at Gosport War Memorial Hospital, which can treat minor injuries such as sprains, cuts, and minor fractures without the need to attend QA's busy A&E department. This is a useful alternative for non-life-threatening injuries and typically has shorter waiting times than A&E.

Private hospital facilities are available at Spire Portsmouth Hospital and other private providers in the wider area. These offer elective surgery, diagnostic imaging, and outpatient consultations on a self-pay or insured basis. Some patients use private facilities to avoid NHS waiting times for non-urgent procedures.

Ambulance response in the Fareham area is provided by South Central Ambulance Service. Response times are a topic of ongoing concern, as they are across the region, with demand frequently exceeding capacity. For life-threatening emergencies, call 999. For urgent but non-life-threatening concerns, NHS 111 provides assessment and direction to the most appropriate service.
