Hampshire's Market Town

Doctors in Fareham

GP surgeries, health centres, and how to register

Fareham has several GP surgeries spread across the borough, serving the local population under the NHS. The practices are part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care System and are generally well regarded, though like GP surgeries across the country, they face pressures on appointment availability and staff recruitment.

The main surgeries in and around Fareham town centre include practices on Highlands Road, Osborn Road, and in the surrounding residential areas. Each surgery has its own catchment area, and residents are expected to register with a practice that covers their home address. Some practices have closed their lists to new patients during periods when demand has exceeded capacity, which can be frustrating for people moving into the area.

The Whiteley Surgery serves the growing population at Whiteley and the northern part of the borough. This practice has expanded as the residential development has grown, though keeping pace with the rate of housebuilding has been a challenge. Portchester has its own surgery, and Park Gate and Locks Heath are served by practices in the western suburbs.

Most practices operate an appointment system with a mix of same-day urgent slots and pre-bookable routine appointments. The move towards telephone and video consultations that accelerated during the pandemic has continued, with many practices now triaging patients by phone before offering a face-to-face appointment. This approach is not universally popular with patients, particularly older residents who prefer to see a doctor in person, but it is now standard practice across the NHS.

Fareham Community Hospital on Highlands Road provides some outpatient and community health services, though it is not an acute hospital. For accident and emergency services, residents go to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham (part of Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust) or Southampton General Hospital, depending on the nature of the emergency and the patient's location within the borough.

Pharmacies are co-located with or near the main surgeries, and there are additional pharmacies on the High Street and in the suburban shopping parades. Dispensing is generally efficient, with most prescriptions ready for same-day collection.

Dental NHS provision is under pressure, as it is across Hampshire. Some practices accept NHS patients, but many have shifted to private or mixed practice. Finding an NHS dentist in Fareham can require persistence and a willingness to join a waiting list. This is a source of genuine frustration for many residents, and the situation has worsened in recent years rather than improved.
