Buses in Fareham

Local bus routes, operators, and where they go

Bus services in Fareham are provided primarily by First Hampshire and Dorset, with some routes operated by Stagecoach and smaller operators. The town centre bus station on West Street is the main interchange point for local services.

The most frequent services connect Fareham to the surrounding towns. Routes to Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent run regularly throughout the day, serving the southern suburbs and the Gosport peninsula. The Eclipse busway (routes X4 and X5) provides a fast service between Fareham and Gosport using a dedicated bus corridor, which avoids the traffic congestion on the traditional road route. The Eclipse is one of the more successful bus rapid transit schemes in England and has improved journey times and reliability significantly compared to the old routes.

Services to Portsmouth run along the A27 corridor, connecting Fareham to Portchester, Cosham, and the city centre. These are busy commuter routes, particularly during peak hours. The journey time to Portsmouth depends on traffic conditions, as the buses do not have a dedicated corridor for this route.

Westbound services connect to Park Gate, Locks Heath, and Swanwick, with some routes continuing to Southampton via the A27. The frequency of these services varies; the main routes run every fifteen to thirty minutes during the day, while off-peak and evening services are less frequent.

Services to Whiteley connect the northern development area to the town centre, though the frequency has been a source of complaint from residents who find it insufficient for the growing population. The relatively low frequency reflects the car-oriented nature of the Whiteley development.

Local routes serve the residential areas within Fareham, connecting suburbs to the town centre for shopping, appointments, and connections to other services. These tend to be less frequent than the inter-urban routes.

Bus fares are structured by zones and distance. Day tickets and weekly passes are available and offer better value for regular users. Contactless payment is accepted on most services, and mobile ticketing apps are increasingly used.

Evening and Sunday services are reduced compared to the weekday daytime timetable. This is a common frustration for residents, particularly those without access to a car who find that public transport options diminish significantly after seven in the evening.

The overall bus provision in Fareham is adequate for a town of its size but does not compare to the frequency and coverage available in larger urban areas. For many journeys, particularly outside peak hours, the car remains the default choice. The Eclipse busway is the exception, demonstrating what dedicated infrastructure can achieve for bus reliability and usage.
