Titchfield Abbey
Heritage, Fareham
Titchfield Abbey is a ruined Premonstratensian abbey founded in 1232, later converted into a Tudor mansion called Place House by the Wriothesley family, Earls of Southampton. The site is managed by English Heritage and is free to visit. The ruins include substantial remains of the Tudor gatehouse and parts of the medieval monastic buildings. The abbey stands in fields to the north of Titchfield village and is an atmospheric site with historical connections to Shakespeare, who is believed to have visited the Wriothesley family here.
