Portchester Castle
Heritage, Fareham
Portchester Castle is the finest surviving example of a Roman Saxon Shore fort in northern Europe, with a Norman keep and inner bailey built within the Roman walls. The castle overlooks Portsmouth Harbour and has been in use, in various forms, from the late third century to the seventeenth century. The site includes the Augustinian priory church of St Mary, which has been in continuous use for worship since the twelfth century. Managed by English Heritage, the castle is a major heritage attraction and the most significant historic monument in the Fareham borough.
