Fort Fareham
Heritage, Fareham
Fort Fareham is one of the Palmerston Forts built in the 1860s as part of the defensive ring around Portsmouth. The fort was designed to protect the landward approaches to the naval base from potential French attack. It is a substantial earthwork and brick structure, though less visible than the hilltop forts on Portsdown Hill. The fort has been used for various purposes since its military role ended, including as an industrial estate. It is not regularly open to the public but can be seen from surrounding roads and paths. The fort is a reminder of the military significance of the Fareham area.
