Hampshire's Market Town

M27 Motorway Opens Through Fareham Borough

1975

The M27 motorway, connecting Southampton to Portsmouth along the south Hampshire corridor, was constructed through the northern part of Fareham borough in stages during the 1970s. The motorway fundamentally changed the town's transport connections, placing it within easy reach of both cities and the national motorway network via the M3 to London. Junctions 9, 10, and 11 all serve the Fareham borough area, providing access points at Park Gate, Whiteley, and the eastern side of the borough respectively. The motorway brought obvious benefits in terms of journey times and connectivity, making Fareham more attractive as a commuter base for workers in Southampton and Portsmouth. It also enabled the development of retail parks, business parks, and the substantial housing development at Whiteley that would follow in later decades. The environmental and social costs were also significant. The motorway severed some rural connections and created a permanent barrier of noise and traffic across the northern part of the borough. Farmland was lost to the road corridor. The M27 has become one of the most congested motorways in southern England, and junction improvements and widening proposals have been debated for years. Despite these issues, the motorway is now an integral part of Fareham's transport infrastructure and one of the reasons the town has grown as a commuter settlement.
