Recycling Centre in Fareham

Fareham HWRC at Newgate Lane and what you can take there

The Fareham Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is located on Newgate Lane, on the southern edge of the town toward Stubbington. It is operated by Hampshire County Council and provides a facility for residents to dispose of household waste that cannot go in the kerbside bins, including bulky items, garden waste, electrical equipment, and hazardous materials.

The site accepts a wide range of materials for recycling and disposal. Separate skips and containers are provided for different waste types, including wood, metal, cardboard, garden waste, electrical items, textiles, cooking oil, batteries, paint, and general non-recyclable waste. The layout is clearly signed, and staff are on hand to direct visitors and help with queries. The aim is to maximise recycling and minimise the amount sent to landfill or incineration.

Access to the site requires a vehicle registration check. Hampshire residents with a vehicle registered in the county can use the centre without a booking, though a booking system has been trialled at various points and may apply during busy periods. Visitors in vans, trailers, or large vehicles may need a permit, as the council restricts commercial use of the household facility. The rules on permits and vehicle types are published on the Hampshire County Council website and are worth checking before visiting if you are using anything larger than a standard car.

The centre is open every day except Christmas Day, with hours that vary by season. Summer hours are longer, typically from nine in the morning to six in the evening, while winter hours are shorter. The site is busiest on weekend mornings and during Bank Holiday periods, when queues can form on Newgate Lane. Visiting on a weekday afternoon is the surest way to avoid a wait.

Common items brought to the centre include furniture, mattresses, broken appliances, garden clippings and branches, DIY waste (in limited quantities for householders), and electronic equipment. Small quantities of rubble, soil, and plasterboard from household DIY projects are accepted, but large quantities suggest building work that should use a commercial waste service. The staff will ask questions if the quantities seem excessive.

Items that are not accepted include asbestos (which requires specialist disposal), tyres from commercial vehicles, and commercial waste of any kind. The centre is for household waste only, and businesses are expected to use commercial waste disposal services.

For items that are too good to throw away, some HWRCs have a reuse area where usable goods can be set aside for charities or community groups. The availability of this varies by site and over time.

Kerbside collections by Fareham Borough Council handle the regular household waste and recycling. The HWRC supplements this by providing for the larger, less frequent items that do not fit in the bins. Between the two services, most household waste disposal needs are covered.
