Hampshire's Market Town

Events in Fareham

Fareham Festival, Christmas lights, and local happenings throughout the year

Fareham has a calendar of events that marks the seasons and brings the community together, from the summer festival to the Christmas lights switch-on. The programme is modest compared to a city, but it provides enough activity to give the town a sense of occasion at regular intervals through the year.

The Fareham Festival, typically held in summer, is the main annual community event. It features live music, stalls, children's activities, and food and drink, usually spread across the town centre or one of the larger green spaces. The festival has varied in format and ambition over the years, depending on funding and organisation, but at its best it draws good crowds and creates a genuine festive atmosphere. Local performers, bands, and community groups provide much of the entertainment.

The Christmas lights switch-on is one of the most popular events of the year. The High Street is decorated with lights, and an evening event marks the official switch-on, typically including a stage with entertainment, market stalls, a visiting Santa, and the kind of festive bustle that brings families into the town centre. The event draws large crowds, and the period from the switch-on through to Christmas is the busiest time for town centre traders.

Remembrance Sunday is marked with a service and parade in the town centre, with wreaths laid at the war memorial. The event is well attended by veterans, service personnel from the nearby military establishments, and residents. Fareham's proximity to the Portsmouth naval base and other military facilities means that Remembrance has particular resonance in the community.

The Monday market on the High Street is not an event in the formal sense, but it provides a regular point of activity and social interaction in the town centre every week. Specialist markets, including French markets and artisan food markets, are held occasionally and draw additional visitors.

Fort Nelson hosts regular events including artillery firing demonstrations, themed weekends, and family activity days. These are well attended and make good use of the site's dramatic setting on Portsdown Hill. The Royal Armouries programme changes through the year and is worth checking.

The Ashcroft Arts Centre on Osborn Road hosts performances, exhibitions, and community events throughout the year. The programme includes drama, music, art exhibitions, and workshops. The centre is a valued cultural resource for the town.

Sporting events include local football fixtures, Parkrun at Holly Hill, and various charity runs, walks, and cycling events through the year. The Holly Hill Parkrun every Saturday morning has become a community institution, bringing together runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities.

For up-to-date event listings, the Fareham Borough Council website, the Fareham News social media pages, and local community noticeboards are the best sources. Events can be added or cancelled at relatively short notice, so checking before travelling is advisable.
