Park Gate
Suburban settlement on the A27 corridor with a commercial strip, post-war housing estates, and good road links to the M27 and both cities.
Park Gate is a suburban area to the north-west of Fareham, sitting astride the A27 Southampton Road at the point where Fareham borough meets the boundary with Eastleigh. The area developed significantly in the second half of the twentieth century, transforming from a rural crossroads into a busy suburban settlement. The main road frontage along Southampton Road and Brook Lane provides a commercial strip with supermarkets, takeaways, estate agents, and service businesses. Coldeast Hospital, which served the area for decades, has been redeveloped as a housing estate, with the historic Coldeast mansion retained as a centrepiece. Park Gate has a practical, unpretentious character. It is not a destination in its own right, but it serves its residents efficiently. The housing is predominantly 1960s to 1990s suburban development: semi-detached and detached houses with gardens, garages, and off-street parking. Some newer infill and apartment developments have added density in recent years. Brook Lane leads south towards Swanwick and the marina at Swanwick Shore, which provides a connection to the waterfront that the main settlement lacks. Park Gate Primary School serves the area, with secondary provision at Brookfield Community School. The M27 junction 9 is close by, making Park Gate attractive to commuters working in Southampton or Portsmouth. The area is well served by bus routes along the A27 corridor. For shopping beyond the local parade, residents head into Fareham town centre or to Locks Heath Shopping Village. Park Gate is not the most characterful part of Fareham borough, but it is well connected, well served, and offers affordable family housing in a location that works for people who need to travel for employment.
