Hampshire's Market Town

Locks Heath

Modern suburban area with shopping village, extensive post-war housing estates, family-oriented schools, and Holly Hill Woodland Park.

Locks Heath is a modern suburban area to the west of Fareham that has grown rapidly since the 1960s. What was once open farmland and scattered houses between Fareham and the Hamble River is now a substantial residential area with its own shopping centre, schools, and community facilities. Locks Heath Shopping Village on Centre Way is the principal retail destination, with a Sainsbury's, a range of smaller shops, cafes, and a library. The shopping village functions as a local high street for the area, providing most everyday needs. The housing is overwhelmingly post-war, with large estates of detached and semi-detached houses built from the 1960s through to the 2000s. Gardens are generally a reasonable size by modern standards, and the streets are laid out in the curving patterns typical of late-twentieth-century residential planning. The area is popular with families. Locks Heath Junior School, Locks Heath Infant School, and several other primaries serve the area, with Brookfield Community School providing secondary education. There are playing fields, community centres, and a recreation ground. Locks Heath has good road access via the A27 and the M27, and bus services connect to Fareham town centre and beyond. The area lacks the historic character of Titchfield or the waterfront appeal of Hill Head, but it offers modern, comfortable family housing in a well-served location. Holly Hill Woodland Park, managed by Fareham Borough Council, provides 22 hectares of mixed woodland and open grassland for walking and recreation. The area has grown from almost nothing in living memory, which means it lacks the layered history of the older parts of the borough, but it has developed a functional community identity of its own.
